Geranium

Classic blooms all summer.

Geraniums are a type of flowering plant that are part of the Geraniaceae family. There are over 700 species of geranium. They are mostly found in temperate regions of the world and prefer to grow in well-lit, sunny areas. Geraniums are known for their showy, brightly colored flowers and their ability to bloom continuously throughout the growing season.

To encourage reblooming, pinch the flowers every so often as they fade. If they are in planters such as the photo, or clay pots, be sure to water them regularly during the hotter summer months. While the red geraniums are well known, there are many varieties of gernaiums, including various colors, scents, and even a native geranium (Geranium maculatum) to the Mid-Atlantic area.
